Untouchables

Untouchables:

This collection was created during the first Lockdown of the coronavirus pandemic. I was in my first year of university on the last term and I suddenly had to create art from my parents house. After learning so many new skills at university, it was difficult for me to let go of those and find new ways to create. As I sat at home watching the news flood with scenes of people panic buying and stockpiling I didn't know what to make of it. I had to go to the shops once or twice and had noticed that everything that we had become used to being present was suddenly missing. We had to make plans to get up early in the morning and be the first there to get flour for us to cook with, pasta was nonexistent in shops for three weeks. All of these products had just become untouchable. I wanted to explore a way to make these products more desirable by using expensive materials, whilst taking away the ability to touch them. The entire collection is just the images of the work and all you will know is what they are made from. I also wanted to render them useless, so these products wouldnt be able to function as they would. Therefore, the eggs shells are made from concrete and the white from gelatin. The pasta is made from felt with a handstitched bag, the butter is made from gelatin with different yellow beads suspended throughout. The toilet paper is made from sandpaper and the flour is beads with a handstitched bag.
